In the 18th century, the skirts of most soldiers’ coats could be hooked up together. This eased marching and revealed the contrasting linings beneath. Often small cloth ornaments were sewn onto the corners of those skirts, where the fastening hooks and eyes, or buttons were located.
This little space, usually less than 2 inches square, became a site for ornament and identity.
Depending on the army and the time period, these ornaments included hearts, diamonds, triangles, crowns, or stars. Grenadiers often had exploding bombs, Light Infantry or chasseurs used hunting horns, and the French of course used the Fleur de lys. Hearts are one of the most common motifs, but original garments reveal a variety of different forms and sizes.
Inspired by these tiny but powerful symbols, these turnback ornament acrylic earrings offer a modern, wearable way to connect with the material culture of the Revolutionary era. The lightweight stud earrings feature stainless steel posts.
